London Gazette: 18th July 1917
Gilbert Baxter attested in January 1898. He deserted in October 1898 and was imprisoned for two weeks. He returned to duty and served in South Africa from 13th November 1899 to the 9th April 1901. In January 1903 we was sent to India where he served for nearly four years. His pre WW1 service saw him regularly in trouble with there being numerous entries in the defaulters book
At the outbreak of war he was posted to France as a Gunner and worked his way up to Sergeant. He was awarded the Military Medal in 1917.
The medal is in good condition.
