A long service medal to a first world war prisoner of war, K55653 Stoker 1st Class Joseph Harold Bricknell, Royal Navy.
George V Royal Naval Long Service & Good Conduct Medal named to K.55653 J.H. Bricknell. Sto.1. H.M.S. Delhi.
Joseph Bricknell was serving on HMS Crusader when it was carrying out a reconnaissance of the German positions off Ostende along with HMS Maori, in preparation for bombardment. The destroyers approached at low water and HMS Maori was struck by an enemy mine and sank. Crusader lowered a boat but was forced to retire due to accurate fire from the German coast defences. All of Maori’s men were captured and taken prisoner along with the men from Crusader’s boat, one of which being Joseph Harold Bricknell.
The medal has some minor wear but is overall in good condition with ribbon.
